Fic: Oz - Dolor, Miguel Alvarez, R

I wrote this three weeks ago, and never posted it.  Why?  I'm not sure.  Maybe it was because the story was so... angsty?  Who knows.  It is angsty, but it's short, so that's a good thing, right?  *g*  Anyway.  I reread it today, and liked it, despite the sad, so I'm posting it.  If you're not into angst, the best way to look at it is to imagine that right after this, Ryan O'Reily kicks Miguel in the ass and tells him to stop being such a crybaby.  Then he sucks Miguel's cock.  That ought to help, right?  Yeah, that's what I thought, too.

Enjoy!

Title: Dolor
Fandom: HBO's Oz
Author: [info]dustandroses
Character: Miguel Alvarez
Rating: R (for semi-graphic depiction of injuries)
Genre: Character Study, Vignette, Angst
Warnings: References to Painful Injuries, Angst!
Summary: Miguel was covered with scars – inside and out.
Spoilers: Specific Spoilers for Season One, but the story takes place Post-Canon
Word Count: 652 words
Disclaimer: Don't own 'em - not making any money off 'em. Dern it.
Prompt Notes: Inspiration for this story taken from tamingthemuse prompt #413: Prince Charming, and the Oz Prompt-A-Thon 2014 Prompt #21 - Scars, marks, tattoos.
Title Notes: The Spanish word dolor can mean many things - "pain, grief, sorrow, ache, soreness, suffering."  I think all of these are appropriate to this story, so I decided to use Dolor rather than to just pick one.

Reminder: There are close to forty (I said forty!!!) fills for the Oz Prompt-a-thon already.  There are not nearly enough comments for each story, or piece of art, so get over there and start reading and commenting!  NOW!  Special kudos to mazephoenix for writing a huge majority of the stories, and to haru776 and nindevotee for making all the art so far!

You still have time to write or produce art for the Prompt-a-thon, so get busy.  Plus, if you ask real nice, I bet [personal profile] ozsaur would let you have an extension.  So go beg real pretty for her, okay?  (She likes that.)

Fic: BtVS: Room Service in Hell, Gen, Spike, PG

Well, hey, it's been a week since my last post.  That means it must be time for my new tamingthemuse story.  Last week, despite the fact that I not only carefully labeled the story Human/Vamp, but tortured both trillingstar and ozsaur over how to label the story, it still got posted in the fandom newsletter as a Spike/youknowwho story, which greatly limits the amount of people who will even look at it sideways.  ~sigh~  So this week, I'm being very careful to make sure everyone knows the story is GEN, and that there's not even any mention of that other guy.

I hope you enjoy it anyway.

Title: Room Service in Hell
Fandom: Buffy, the Vampire Slayer
Author: dustandroses
Character: Spike
Rating: PG
Genres: Character Study, Ficlet
Warnings: None
Summary: Spike is bored.  And in hell.
Spoilers: None
Word Count: 617 words
Disclaimer: Don't own 'em - not making any money off 'em. Dern it.
Prompt Notes: Inspiration for this chapter taken from tamingthemuse prompt #373: Cultivate
Notes: Thanks to Ozsaur for the image of Spike in Giles' bathtub that got this ficlet started.

Fic: Oz - Lunch Break - Father Ray Mukada & Andrea Phelan, R

Lunch Break was written as backstory on a character we don't see enough of in Oz.  Her name is Andrea Phelan, and pretty much all we know about her is that she's got a husband and three kids, and works as a hack in Unit B.  And that her character is played by Sandra Denton, also know as Pepa of the '80s hip hop group Salt-n-Pepa.  Phelan is an extremely minor character, who had just a few lines in several different episodes per season in Seasons Four, Five and Six.

I liked what I saw of her, and decided to use her in the story I'm writing for Oz Big Bang this year.  So what I've written here is backstory on her character.  It's independent from the Big Bang Fic, and can be read as a separate and complete story on its own.

Title: Lunch Break
Fandom: HBO's Oz
Author: [info]dustandroses
Characters: Father Ray Mukada & Andrea Phelan
Rating: R for Language
Genre: Gen
Warnings: None
Summary: Andrea practically danced around the room, and Ray laughed at her buoyant mood.
Spoilers: None
Word Count: 1662 words
Disclaimer: Don't own 'em - not making any money off 'em. Dern it.
Prompt Notes: Inspiration for this chapter taken from tamingthemuse prompt #371: Gilded Cage
Notes: Takes place in August of 2005, two years after the series ends.
I've always wished they'd done more with Andrea Phelan's character.  But Tom Fontana didn't, so I had to do it myself.  Since so little is known of her, pretty much everything about her character is mine, except her husband and children.  If you're wondering what she looks like, that's her in my icon.
This short story can be taken on its own, or read as backstory on Andrea's character for my Oz Big Bang story, which will be posted in October.  You'll see more of her then.

Fic: First Storm of the Season, Xander-centric, Gen

I had this image, from the first time I read the prompt, of Xander staring out at the rain from the door of an African dwelling.  This may have something to do with the fact that my Oz Big Bang fic has several scenes during which Xander, who's landed himself in Oz, talks about his journeys through Africa, and the time he spent with a tribe of Africans who traditionally share land with the Maasai.  So I did research into both tribes, and had all this info running around in my head for the last couple of weeks.  It seemed silly of me not to use it, right?  And would you look at that?  I'm back to Gen fic again!  It's all tamingthemuse's fault.  They bring out the gen in me, for some strange reason.

Enjoy!

Title: First Storm of the Season
Fandom: Buffy, the Vampire Slayer
Author: dustandroses
Characters: Xander & OFC
Rating: PG
Genres: Gen Fic, Character Study
Warnings: none
Summary: Xander spends some time with a young slayer, and reminds himself of a few home truths.
Spoilers: None
Word Count: 1871 words
Disclaimer: Don't own 'em - not making any money off 'em. Dern it.
Prompt Notes: Inspiration for this chapter taken from tamingthemuse prompt #370: Storm
Notes: Well, I wrote 922 words of this story yesterday, and thought I was about through with it.  Seems I was wrong.  I wrote just as much, again today.  But it's a better story than it was yesterday.  IMO, of course.  *g*

Year End Review Time

Time for the "Fic What Dusty Wrote Last Year" post!

I don't always do one of these, but I'm trying to figure out what I wrote, since it seems like the only thing I wrote all year was Xandercles.  I know that can't be right, so I'm going to sort it out in a post.  Make it official and all that.

ETA: okay, I just added them all together, and I wrote over 188,000 words in 2012.  Day-um.  82k of that is Xandercles alone, and Lost Souls (Oz Big Bang) accounts for another 59k.  Add in Monstrous, which was 21k, and that leaves 26,000 words to divide up into 16 stories.  That averages out to about 1600 words a story, and since many of them were ficlets of under 1k, a couple of longer fic obviously carried the extra wordage...

I have to credit tamingthemuse for most of this - only four of these stories do not have TtM prompts attached, and I'm pretty damn sure I used some during Oz Big Bang, even if they didn't make it to the notes.  Writing at least 500 words a week for the prompt they supplied helped keep me on target.  So if anyone needs to light a fire under their muse, I recommend it.

Of course, the actual ideas that got the stories moving were usually prompted by ozsaur, with occasional brilliance from my other cohort in crime, trillingstar.  Those two are definitely my heroes and shit.  They've both been super supportive this year.  I'm a lucky person to have them as friends.

So, I guess I have a goal to aim for beat this year, then, huh?  *g*  Maybe I'll aim at 200k for this year's total.

Anyway, here we go!

By the way - thank you so much to whoever nominated my Spike & Tara Gen fic, For Remembrance, for a "No Rest for the Wicked Round 9" award!  I am honored

The awards are still open for nominations through the end of January, so go nom your favorite fic today!

Fic: BtVS, For Remembrance, Tara & Spike, PG

No time for Xandercles this week, sorry.  There should be a chapter next week, though - I hate to leave you hanging after last week's cliffhanger.  I'd planned for this story to be brief, and it is, I guess, for me.  But it grew a bit from what I'd expected.  It ended up in Tara's POV, which I totally hadn't expected, but it worked out that way, and I'm happy with it.  Gen again...  For some reason, tamingthemuse seems to bring out the Gen in me.  What the hell's up with that?

If I don't get back on LJ before then, Merry Christmas to those who celebrate it, and Happy Kwaanza for those who celebrate that holiday.  I already missed Hanukkah and Winter Solstice.  Oops?  Well, whatever winter holiday you celebrate, go you.  *g*

Enjoy!

Title: For Remembrance
Fandom: Buffy, the Vampire Slayer
Author: [info]dustandroses
Characters:  Tara & Spike
Rating: PG
Genres: Character Study, Ficlet, Gen
Warnings: None
Summary: “…with immediacy and intensity, smell activates the memory, allowing our minds to travel freely in time."    *See notes for quote details*
Spoilers: Through Season Four, Episode Six: New Moon Rising
Word Count:  1,074 words

Prompt Notes: Inspiration for this story taken from [info]tamingthemuse prompt #335: Perfume
Notes:  If you need any information on sachets, you can find it here
*The quote in the summary is from Tom Robbins' novel Jitterbug Perfume.  I haven't read it, but since a good deal of the novel is about the sense of smell and perfumes, it seemed fitting.

Fic: BtVS - Pandemonium, Spike, G

Today I have a short character study type ficlet.  Early Spike, Big and Bad, and more than capable of handling a maelstrom when it smacks him in the face.
(OMG, I wrote Gen again!  ::: runs away flailing:::)

Sorry that there's been no Xandercles for two weeks in a row.  Blame it on my Big Bang project, which should be done already, but isn't quite.  The beta and final brushups are underway, though, so Xandercles should be back next week.  I'm glad...I miss it!

Title: Pandemonium
Fandom: Buffy, the Vampire Slayer
Author: [info]dustandroses
Beta:  ozsaur, my hero and shit
Character: Spike
Rating: G
Genres: Episode Related, Character Study, Ficlet
Warnings: None
Summary:  For the first time in decades Spike spends Halloween outside the lair, and what he finds is quite unexpected.  Fortunately, Spike is capable of appreciating a little mayhem when he finds himself in the midst of it.
Spoilers: Through Season Two, Episode Six: Halloween
Word Count:  582 words
Disclaimer: Don't own 'em - not making any money off 'em. Dern it.
Prompt Notes: Inspiration for this chapter taken from [info]tamingthemuse prompt #324: Maelstrom
Notes:  The last line of the ficlet was taken from the Buffy episode "Halloween" written by Carl Ellsworth.
Here are a few links about the Saltstraumen and other maelstroms.  I'm particularly fascinated by them, so I looked them up on Youtube, there is lots of good live footage of maelstroms in that link.

Fic: BtVS - Thanks for the Fluffernutter, Spike, Xander & Dawn Friendship fic, PG

What's all this then?  Sorry, no Xandercles this week.  The muse took one look at the prompt, and headed in the opposite direction.  Yes, that's right.  Looks like Gen.  It's still Spike/Xander friendship, of course (I can't seem to get away from those two), but there's a strong Dawn presence as well.  Makes sense, since it's a Post-The Gift AU.  I hope you enjoy it anyway, and I'll be back with Xandercles next week!

Title: Thanks for the Fluffernutter
Fandom: Buffy, the Vampire Slayer
Author: [info]dustandroses
Betas:  ozsaur, my hero and shit
Pairing: Spike/Xander friendship, Dawn-fic
Rating: PG
Genres: Post-The Gift Fic, Friendship Fic, AU
Warnings: Mention of Canon deaths: Buffy & (briefly) Joyce.
Summary:  After a month of struggling to convince Willow that bring Buffy back from the dead is a bad idea, Xander seeks refuge at Buffy's grave.  What he finds there gives him hope for the future.
Spoilers: Through Season Six, Episodes 1 & 2 - Bargaining Parts One and Two
Word Count:  1059 words
Disclaimer: Don't own 'em - not making any money off 'em. Dern it.
Prompt Notes: Inspiration for this chapter taken from [info]tamingthemuse prompt #323: All Soul's Day

You can find out more about All Soul's Day (also known in some countries as Day of the Dead) at the link.

Fic: The Xandenberg Disaster, Xander, PG

OMG, I wrote gen yet again! I swear, it's all [livejournal.com profile] tamingthemuse's fault.  Well, that, and the fact that my final move from my past to my current residence took much longer than expected, and I had no time to get Xandercles done for this week. Instead I just managed to finish 500 words for the prompt in time to get it posted before the deadline. But it's a fun 500 words, so I'm glad I wrote it, even if it is GEN!

Title: The Xandenberg Disaster
Author: [info]dustandroses
Character: Xander
Rating: PG
Warnings: A sick sense of humor?
Summary: Xander is on the run.  (Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered revisited.)
Spoilers: Season Two, Episode Sixteen: Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered
Word Count: Exactly 500 words
Disclaimer: Don't own 'em - not making any money off 'em. Dern it.
Prompt Notes: Inspired by [info]tamingthemuse prompt #304 - Dystychiphobia (the fear of accidents)
Notes: Okay, two weeks in a row now, the tamingthemuse prompt has stomped on me and laughed. But fortunately, I have friends like [personal profile] trillingstar and [personal profile] ozsaur, who put on their shit-kickers and stomped right back. This week, Trill suggested a play on the Buffy episode where Amy casts a love spell on Xander that has almost every woman in Sunnydale chasing him down. Bam. Just like that - I saw the light.  Okay, so maybe not exactly like that.  Actually, there was description of school buses and kiddies and even some ALL CAPS.  So thanks, Trill!  Hopefully, now that the moving is mostly out of the way, Xandercles will be back next week! Enjoy!

Fic: BtVS: Starts With An Earthquake, Spike, PG13

Title: Starts With An Earthquake
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Author: [info]dustandroses
Beta: [info]ozsaur, my hero and shit
Characters/Pairings: Spike/Xander, Buffy/Riley, Tara/Willow, Dawn, Anya/Giles
Rating: PG13
Genre: Gen - there are canon and non-canon pairings mentioned, but they are not the focus of the story.
Summary: What do you do when you're stuck in the middle of nowhere, celebrating the fact that you've made it through an entire year since the world as you knew it ended?
Warnings: None, really.
Spoilers: The BtVS series through Season Seven, sorta. It's AU.
Word Count: 1495 words
Disclaimer: Don't own 'em - not making any money off 'em. Dern it.
Prompt Notes: Written for [livejournal.com profile] tamingthemuse prompt #278: Rapid Eye Movement, which I translated as R.E.M. so I could use their song "It's the End of the World as We Know it (and I Feel Fine.) Hey, they say the prompts are open to interpretation, right?
Author's Notes: An AU Post-Apocafic vignette: Tara and Anya are still alive, but Xander has lost his eye and there are baby slayers hanging out, so it's a bit of a mix. Totally ignores the comics. Lyrics from the song It's the End of the World as We Know It (and I Feel Fine) by R.E.M. are taken from absolutelyrics.com.  I have a feeling these lyrics have been used for apocafic more than once already, but hey, they fit the prompt.   I blame [livejournal.com profile] tamingthemuse for all the gen fic I've been writing these days. :::points finger:::   It's all their fault!
